Faraday was developed through a breeding program conducted by the University of Queensland. It is a result of crossing the varieties EGA Gregory and a novel PHS donor parent line. The aim of the breeding program was to create a prime hard wheat variety with improved yield and superior PHS tolerance specifically for the northern and south-eastern classification zones.

 

Pre-Harvest Sprouting Tolerance

One of the standout features of Faraday is its pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) tolerance, which has been extensively tested through grain dormancy measurements and simulated weather exposure experiments. These tests involved subjecting the grains to simulated rainfall using a rain simulator, and the quality changes were assessed using the falling number test.

In the simulated rainfall experiment, Faraday exhibited the highest tolerance to PHS, consistently maintaining a level above the AUH grade, while other varieties fell below 250 seconds. This highlights Faraday’s superiority in terms of resisting sprouting before harvest, which can have detrimental effects on grain quality.

Faraday offers flexibility in terms of planting window, ranging from early sowing to the main season. It thrives particularly well in dryland growing conditions. Under favourable conditions, it tends to exhibit a taller plant type, maximizing its growth potential.

Furthermore, Faraday boasts an excellent rust resistance package, providing protection against three major rust diseases. It is rated R-MR for stripe and stem rust and MR for leaf rust. This robust resistance profile ensures the longevity and productivity of the crop by mitigating the risks associated with rust infections.
