With favorable seasonal conditions, Severn Forage Wheat provides excellent early growth and bulk feed. As a winter wheat variety, Severn will not go to head until after the vernalisation requirement has been met by cold temperatures. The quick, early growth allows for continuous or rotational grazing through the cooler months followed by a range of options in the spring.
High yields of hay or silage will help growers conserve forage for the future and maximise the returns from the paddock. Severn is an awnless winter wheat variety making it more palatable and ideal for late-season grazing or hay production.
More herbicide options with Severn forage wheat
As a wheat variety, Severn has more herbicide options to control weeds than other cereals, including oats. With a range of weeds becoming of greater concern in many Australian cropping areas, this forage wheat variety is compatible with a wide range of pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides. It allows the opportunity to clean up paddocks, with a combination of early herbicides and later grazing or forage conservation techniques.
Excellent agronomic package with Severn forage wheat
Severn Forage Wheat was selected for its superior agronomic characteristics with key features being a very good disease resistance package, robust straw strength, and excellent standability.
It is suitable for grazing, hay, or silage however, has shown good grain yields which will allow growers to also harvest it as a feed grain. Recommended planting rates are 60 to 80 kilograms per hectare for dryland, through to 80 to 120 kilograms per hectare for high rainfall or irrigation. A minimal rainfall of 400mm is recommended.
